Product information
Our materials have character and a story. Because they are antique, natural, reclaimed, hand-formed, rustic, or aged, they carry traces of their past. This means that minor damage may occur and that planks or tiles may vary in color, size, or thickness. Natural stone may show fossils and light or dark veins, and old or rustic wood may contain cracks and knots. For wooden materials, it is also important that the room has a stable humidity and temperature so the wood can behave properly over time.
Our showrooms feature more than 350 marble and sandstone fireplaces, ranging from antique examples from the 16th to the 19th century to hand-carved French sandstone made to measure. You will find a wide selection of styles and dimensions.
Installing a fireplace is specialist work. We are happy to put you in touch with an experienced fireplace installer. We ensure safe delivery; the installer takes care of the professional installation, including the custom-made hood, back panel, and any additional features such as a gas insert.
Antique Burgundy slabs made of limestone or sandstone instantly give any home a rustic appearance. Originally, they were laid in a random pattern, but they can also be sorted by similar widths so they can be installed in rows. The color varies by region, with tones ranging from white and cream to yellow and light brown.
Burgundy slabs—both antique and new—come from the French region of Burgundy, where several quarries are located. They differ in hardness and appearance and should not be confused with Belgian bluestone slabs (Arduin or blue stone), which are dark gray in color and considerably harder.
’t Achterhuis offers a wide selection of Belgian bluestone (Arduin or blue stone) in various sizes and finishes, ranging from neatly sawn to heavily aged, honed, or polished. This durable natural stone is available in different varieties, including Kerkdallen, Noire de Mazy, and Namur stone.
In addition to floor tiles, we also offer ornaments, stairs, porticos, columns, and other elements in Belgian bluestone, as well as assembled tabletops and bases made from old Arduin. Many products are available directly from stock.
’t Achterhuis has an extensive assortment of antique and old French, Belgian, and Dutch clay tiles—also known as estriken or farmhouse tiles—in various sizes and color shades. The collection includes square, rectangular, and hexagonal tiles in tones such as blue/gray, red, variegated, and blanche et jaune (white and yellow). All tiles are hand-formed, carefully sorted, and thoroughly cleaned.
Sizes range from approximately 11 × 11 cm to 25 × 25 cm. Thanks to their durable and timeless character, these tiles are suitable for any space and work excellently with underfloor heating, both in modern homes and historic buildings.
’t Achterhuis offers a wide range of oak floors, from parquet to long, wide rustic oak planks in various finishes such as planed, brushed, and aged French oak. Our exclusively aged floorboards are treated in the workshop to achieve an authentic 18th- or 19th-century appearance.
We also supply old oak floors made from French wagon planks, available in various widths and with tongue-and-groove joints. Our assortment further includes one-off batches of barracks parquet, herringbone parquet, Hungarian point patterns, and the exclusive Versailles parquet, also made from old oak.
’t Achterhuis has a wide selection of parquet floors in stock, including old oak herringbone, Hungarian point, strip parquet, barracks parquet, and the exclusive Versailles parquet. The herringbone parquet is made from old French wagon planks and can be supplied with borders featuring upright or horizontal friezes. Oak is known for its durability, warm appearance, and versatility, and can be finished in various ways, such as oil, wax, or lacquer.
Antique staircases are unique architectural elements that add timeless character to a home. They must be carefully measured and drawn so they can be properly integrated into new-build or renovation projects. An antique staircase can be installed in the same way as a modern staircase and is fully demountable, allowing parts to be easily inspected, cleaned, or replaced.
